Alimentação de equinos da raça Árabe. Infoteca-e
MANZANO, A..

ALTERNATIVE ESTIMATION METHODS OF NONLINEAR DEMAND SYSTEMS AgEcon
Capps, Oral, Jr..
Several contemporary models of consumer demand comprise complete sets on nonlinear demand functions. Estimation methods should take into account parameter nonlinearity, cross-equation correlation, variance-covariance singularity of the disturbance terms, and various parameter restrictions. This paper presents a theoretical discussion and some empirical results using the maximum likelihood (ML) method and the iterative version of Zellner's seemingly unrelated regression (IZEF) method in the estimation of a nonlinear system of demand equations (the linear expenditure system) when the disturbance terms are both contemporaneously and serially correlated. On the basis of the evaluation of parameter estimates and their asymptotic standard errors as well as...

Amplification of environmental fluctuations by marine ecosystems ArchiMer
Silvert, W.
Environmental variability is an important cause of fluctuations in marine ecosystems. Some ecosystems appear to have characteristic resonant frequencies, and even a weak environmental signal at one of these frequencies can cause large changes in population sizes. It is already known that some commercial fish stocks undergo abundance cycles which can be explained in this way, since models of their population dynamics exhibit resonances at or near the appropriate frequencies. In this paper it is shown that resonance found in Lotka-Volterra models of predator-prey systems appears to be a likely cause of many of the fluctuations found in marine ecosystems.

Amsterdam Expeditions to the West Indian Islands, Report 23. Bogidiella (B.) neotropica Ruffo, 1952 (Crustacea, Amphipoda) rediscovered in Venezuela Naturalis
Platvoet, Dirk.
Bogidiella neotropica was described by Ruffo in 1952 after a single specimen of unknown sex, from Amazonia (Brazil). Both sexes have been found recently in the Guarico district, Venezuela. From the absence of secondary sexual differences in the male appendages it is clear that the species belongs to the subgenus Bogidiella s. str. The Venezuelan specimens are redescribed and illustrated.

Amsterdam Expeditions to the West Indian Islands, Report 24. The genus Heterocypris (Crustacea, Ostracoda) in the West Indies. Part II. Carapace length, ecology and zoogeography Naturalis
Broodbakker, Nico W..
Populations of three species of the genus Heterocypris: H. margaritae Margalef, 1961, H. antillensis Broodbakker, 1982, and H. punctata Keyser, 1975, sampled in the Caribbean region are studied. (1) An attempt is made to correlate differences in mean carapace length between samples from different islands and within intra-insular samples, with environmental factors. (2) Differences in the ecology of the three species are determined. (3) The distribution of the three species is discussed. (4) Related species are compared. Differences in carapace length appear not to be related with genetic differences, but to be caused by environmental influences. In H. margaritae correlation was found between carapace length and size (as area) of habitat, and in H....

Amsterdam Expeditions to the West Indian Islands, Report 25. The genus Hemicypris (Crustacea, Ostracoda) in the West Indies Naturalis
Broodbakker, Nico W..
A worldwide list of species that have to be assigned to the genus Hemicypris is given. H. exigua n. sp. and H. barbadensis n. sp. are described. A redescription is given of H. reticulata (Klie, 1930), a species from Paraguay, which was also encountered in the Antillean islands. Descriptions of chaetotaxy are made according to the system of Broodbakker & Danielopol (1982). The morphology of the limbs of the three species is similar to that of the species of the genus Heterocypris encountered in the West Indies. Like in the genus Heterocypris, a considerable amount of variation in mean carapace length is found. The relative length of some setae seems to be fairly constant within, and characteristic of, each species. Some remarks are made on the ecology...

Amsterdam Expeditions to the West Indian Islands, Report 27. Calabozoidea, a new suborder of stygobiont Isopoda, discovered in Venezuela Naturalis
Lieshout, Sylvia E.N. van.
A new type of stygobiont Isopoda has been collected from wells in the “llanos” of Venezuela, near Calabozo, and in the hyporheal of a river in the Aragua State. On account of its body segmentation, and structure of uropods and pleopods, it must be considered as representing a new suborder. A diagnosis of the new suborder, new family and new genus, and a description of the type-species, are provided. Finally, a morphologic comparison with some of the already known suborders is made.

Amsterdam Expeditions to the West Indian Islands, Report 28. Predation as a factor influencing the occurrence and distribution of small Crustacea in West Indian groundwaters Naturalis
Stock, Jan H..
Hadziid Amphipoda are known from inland groundwaters of 14 West Indian islands, Thermosbaenacea from those of 9 islands. Only 4 islands show joint occurrence of both groups. Even in islands of joint occurrence, hadziids occur significantly more often alone in a given locality, than in combination with Thermosbaenacea or Copepoda Cyclopidae. The latter two groups do not show any significant avoidance of each other. Some possible causes for the non-random occurrence of small groundwater Crustacea are discussed; it seems most likely that hadziids predate on other Crustacea, such as Thermosbaenacea or Cyclopidae. This predation may have, or have had, influence on the actual distribution patterns of the groups under consideration.

Amsterdam Expeditions to the West Indian Islands, Report 29. Presence of a member of the genus Saliweckelia (Amphipoda) on Tortuga, Venezuela Naturalis
Lieshout, Sylvia E.N. Van.
A population of Saliweckelia (Amphipoda) from Tortuga (Venezuela) is compared with populations from Curaçao and Bonaire (Netherlands Antilles). Considerable variability in a number of characters, within and between the different populations, makes it difficult to ascertain the taxonomic status of the Tortugan specimens. It may not be excluded that all three populations belong to one variable species.

Amsterdam Expeditions to the West Indian Islands, Report 32. Ein neuer Copepode (Cyclopoida: Gnathostoma) von den Westindischen Inseln: Halicyclops antiguaensis n. sp Naturalis
Herbst, Hans-Volkmar.
In a well on the island of Antigua (West Indies), one female of a new species of Halicyclops was found, described as H. antiguaensis n. sp. The male still remains unknown. The new species belongs to the thermophilus group of Halicyclops, characterized by a spiniform protuberance on each side of the genital somite, the end of which is curved backward, and a spine formula of the third exopodite segment of P1-P4 of 3, 4, 4, 3. It differs from H. thermophilus Kiefer, 1929, H. spinifer Kiefer, 1935, H. venezuelaensis Lindberg, 1954, and H. dedeckeri Brownell, 1983, by the relatively short spines on P5. The new species is closely related to H. latus Shen & Tai, 1964, but in this species the furca and segment 3 of the 4th endopodite are relatively longer. Due...

Amsterdam Expeditions to the West Indian Islands, Report 35. The genus Strandesia and other Cypricercini (Crustacea, Ostracoda) in the West Indies. Part I. Taxonomy Naturalis
Broodbakker, Nico W..
Seven new species and one new subspecies of the genus Strandesia s.l. Stuhlmann, 1888, are described. Four species reared by Sars (1901) from dried mud from Brazil are redescribed. The genera Acanthocypris Claus, 1892, and Neocypris Sars, 1901, are considered as subgenera of Strandesia s.l. Two species from Europe, formerly attributed to Cypricercus Sars, 1895, are redescribed. One of these, C. obliquus (Brady, 1868) was used as type-species for the erection of a new tribe and of the genus Bradleycypris by McKenzie (1982), but proves to be a member of the subgenus Neocypris of Strandesia s.l. Therefore Bradleycypris becomes a subjective synonym of Neocypris. On the other hand, Cypricercus fuscatus (Jurine, 1820) effectively shows the characters used by...

Amylase et trypsine du zooplancton et surveillance du milieu pelagique en Bretagne ArchiMer
Samain, J F; Moal, J; Le Coz, Jr; Daniel, J Y.
As the composition and physiological activity of zooplankton is mostly controlled by environmental conditions, their measurement in situ may be a suitable tool for monitoring the pelagic system. The digestive enzymes, amylase and trypsin, of the zooplankton of coastal waters of Brittany, have been measured during three years as their levels are related to taxonomic composition and feeding patterns of zooplankton. There is evidence of a well-defined annual cycle of these enzymes related to changes in taxonomic composition and feeding patterns with different characterized phases. Observed variability is analysed and associated with the diversity, the stability and the difference in maturity of ecological conditions in the area.
